Every Sunday morning in Shaoxing, Zhejiang, a unique group of runners gathers at the sports center in Yuecheng district. A 35-centimeter rope connects visually impaired runners with volunteer guides — short but strong enough to build trust, coordination, and confidence.
The Dark Running Club in Shaoxing was founded on July 2. It has since brought together five visually impaired runners and 15 regular volunteers. During each run, guides give clear cues about obstacles, turns and changes in pace, helping runners safely navigate the track.
For 58-year-old Wang Jigao, running was unimaginable for more than 30 years after he lost his sight in an accident at age 25. At his first session, he was nervous about falling or colliding with others. After several runs, however, he started to feel more relaxed and energetic. "That rope is like my navigation system," he said.
For volunteer Chen Xingjuan, who once completed full marathons herself, running has become a way to support others. "We should not only be their eyes, but also their friends," she said.
As the club grows, its members hope to help more visually impaired people step outside, rediscover the joy of running, and embrace a wider world.
