An international group of young visitors explored Shaoxing, East China's Zhejiang province, on Sept 22, discovering the city's rich heritage and modern vitality along the Eastern Zhejiang Canal.

Participants from Pakistan, Brazil, Poland, Sri Lanka, Nigeria, Thailand, and Vietnam visited Yuecheng district, exploring the ancient towpath, Shaoxing Rice Wine Town, and waterways while learning how the city's history has been shaped by water.

At the Eastern Zhejiang Canal Culture Park, they visited the canal museum and learned about the waterway's more than 2,500-year history. They also learned how Shaoxing has balanced industrial development with environmental protection through centralized wastewater treatment, industrial clustering, and ecological restoration.

At Shaoxing Rice Wine Town, the visitors explored the traditional brewing techniques and customs surrounding Shaoxing rice wine. Nigerian participant Uzodinma Chinenye Gerlof, a postdoctoral researcher at Beijing Language and Culture University, said the visit helped her better understand Chinese culture, from the brewing process to the tradition of storing wine for major family occasions.

The group also tried the water sleeves of Yueju Opera and enjoyed an evening cruise featuring performances inspired by Shaoxing's history and legends.

The event is part of International Youth China Tour — Canal Cultural Heritage Journey, which uses the Grand Canal as a bridge for cultural exchange and international communication.
