The 2023 Spring Festival Opera Gala, a cultural show produced by China Central Radio and Television for family reunions on the first day of the first lunar New Year, completed pre-recording in Wenzhou, East China's Zhejiang province, on Dec 10.
It was the first time since its inception 33 years ago that the gala moved its venue outdoors and chose to carry out filming in Wenzhou, the birthplace of Southern Opera, the oldest mature form of opera in Chinese history.
The main stage was located at Jiushan Shuhui, a local book club originating from the Southern Song Dynasty (1127-1279), which preserves the earliest existing complete opera script in China, Top Scholar Zhang Xie.
