Wenzhou Research Institute, a joint initiative between Wenzhou and Nanyang Technological University, Singapore, was launched on Oct 22 at China Eye Valley in Longwan district.
The initiative marks a milestone in the city's efforts to connect with world-class innovation resources and accelerate the growth of its biomedical industry.
As a leading global research university, NTU ranked 12th in the latest QS World University Rankings, with five disciplines — including condensed matter physics, energy and fuels, and materials science — placed in the top five worldwide according to US News rankings (2025-26).
The collaboration, initiated in 2023, has involved two years of joint planning to establish a platform that integrates talent cultivation, technological innovation, and industrial transformation.
The new institute will focus on advancing frontier biomedical fields such as biomaterials, early-stage diagnostics, and data analytics, to generate high-value patents and internationally recognized research, further strengthening Wenzhou's role in life sciences innovation.
In talent development, the institute will leverage NTU's top-tier academic resources and adopt a "3+1+1" dual-supervisor model to train doctoral students, nurturing globally oriented scientists and innovative leaders.
Longwan district currently hosts 15 university-city innovation platforms and more than 500 provincial- and municipal-level R&D institutes.
Local authorities said the district will continue to optimize its business environment and promote closer collaboration among research institutes, enterprises, and medical institutions.
