The Netherlands Garden at the 15th China (Wenzhou) International Garden Expo, scheduled to run from April to July 2026, will offer a concentrated experience of the Netherlands' most distinctive landscape elements, highlighted by a full-scale windmill set amid expansive fields of seasonal flowers.
The windmill stands as the garden's visual centerpiece. While wind-powered technology first appeared in ancient Persia and spread to Europe along early trade routes, the Netherlands became its most influential innovator. In the 13th century, the Dutch developed advanced windmill technology and applied it to large-scale drainage and land reclamation.
Planting design draws on the Netherlands' horticultural tradition. Tulips, cultivated in the country since the 12th century, are central to the garden and are paired with irises, lilies, and hyacinths. Selected for their distinctive seasonal character, long blooming periods, and strong visual appeal, the plants ensure consistent viewing quality throughout the expo. Layered planting creates subtle shifts in color and atmosphere from morning light to evening.

The design team adjusted planting plans in close cooperation with Chinese horticultural experts to adapt to local climate and soil conditions, highlighting practical collaboration between the two sides. Sustainability is also a core consideration, with durable plant varieties selected for replanting after the expo.
Beyond its visual appeal, the garden serves as a platform for cultural exchange, allowing visitors to connect with nature while gaining insight into Dutch landscape traditions.
