Huolu village in Yongjia county, Wenzhou, Zhejiang province, has been selected as a demonstration village for the agritourism integration of the Villages Recognition Initiative by the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO). This recognition places it among global models for sustainable rural development.
The selection process evaluated villages based not only on their economic output but also on the preservation of local culture, use of ecological resources, and innovative rural practices.
The five selected villages from Zhejiang highlight four development categories of ecological protection, agritourism, technological innovation, and traditional food culture, reflecting the success of Zhejiang's Green Rural Revival Program.
Situated in the Nanxi River Scenic Area, Huolu village has a rich history of over 800 years, a favorable environment, and convenient transportation. Embracing the Green Rural Revival Program, the village has focused on preserving its rural landscapes and cultural heritage.
The village has capitalized on its intangible cultural heritage — the making techniques of Yongjia wheat cakes — by establishing a workshop for education, production, and sales. It has transformed 11.33 hectares of farmland into a park, complemented by a sunflower base, creating a tourism route linked with local homestays.
Today, Huolu village exemplifies a blend of production, life, and ecology, earning titles such as National Beautiful Leisure Village and Zhejiang Low (Zero)-Carbon Village, vitalizing its resources with wheat cakes and flower fields.
