An Iberian flamenco dance troupe from Spain performed classic dance drama Carmen on the evening of Sept 17 at the Ningbo Grand Theater.

But before the spotlight hit the stage, a unique East-West artistic dialogue unfolded at the Zhou Xinfang Theatre Art Museum in Cicheng town.

Spanish dancers immersed themselves in Chinese opera heritage, exploring the life of Peking Opera master Zhou Xinfang from Cicheng and learning about Ningbo's local opera forms — Yongju Opera, Yaoju Opera and Ninghai Pingdiao.

Live excerpts like The Butterfly Lovers showcased the elegance and emotional depth of Chinese opera, captivating the flamenco artists despite the language barrier.

The exchange deepened with a hands-on styling session. The Spanish performers tried on traditional costumes, headpieces and makeup, then learned classic opera gestures and vocal techniques. The fiery spirit of flamenco met the refined grace of Chinese opera, sparking a joyful artistic fusion.

In a final discussion, artists from both cultures shared their insights, exploring differences and common ground.

"I've never experienced anything like this," said dancer Maria Gayubo. "Sharing art across cultures is magical," she added.

The event aimed to foster immersive and interactive exchanges. It highlighted Ningbo's rich opera legacy, while promoting mutual empowerment between Chinese and international art — shaping a new cultural identity for the region, said an organizer of the event.
