Taizhou's tourism booms during May Day holiday
Taizhou in East China's Zhejiang province recorded strong tourism growth during the May Day holiday, receiving 4.48 million visits from April 28 to May 5, up 8.92 percent year-on-year.
Major scenic areas played a leading role in attracting tourists, with three national 5A scenic sites — the Ancient City of Taizhou, Shenxianju Scenic Area, and Tiantai Mountain — together receiving 1.26 million visits.
Visitor sources continued to improve, with travelers from Shanghai and Jiangsu province accounting for large shares of out-of-province arrivals. Travelers aged 23 to 55 made up nearly 75 percent of visitors, boosting demand for immersive performances, cultural products, and night tourism.
Taizhou also expanded its study-tour and family-oriented travel products, with discounted admission policies and themed educational routes, attracting about 800,000 primary and middle school students and generating 1.13 billion yuan ($166.08 million) in study-tour spending.
Food tourism became another major draw, as the fifth China Taizhou Premium Food Week received more than 670,000 visits and generated 14 million yuan in sales. Michelin-listed restaurants operated at full capacity during the holiday, while local seafood feasts and specialty dessert events strengthened the city's culinary tourism appeal.
Rural tourism and creative cultural projects also gained popularity, with countryside activities, coastal experiences, and renovated industrial heritage sites drawing crowds and stimulating consumption.
