Quzhou seeks global creative designs for Chinese character 'li'
Quzhou in East China's Zhejiang province has issued a global call for creative interpretations of the Chinese character "礼" (li), which is commonly understood as ritual, courtesy, respect, or social harmony.
To celebrate Quzhou hosting the 18th Zhejiang Provincial Games and the 12th Zhejiang Provincial Para Games in October and November 2026, the city is inviting people worldwide to design their interpretation of the character "礼". The submission deadline is July 31.
Quzhou, known as the "Home of Southern Confucianism," has deep roots in Confucian culture. Over 800 years ago, descendants of Confucius moved south and settled in Quzhou, establishing the city as a center of Confucian thought.
Over time, the concept of "礼" — emphasizing etiquette, respect, and social harmony in Confucian thought — has become integral to daily life and a defining characteristic of the city.

Selected works will be featured in a large-scale art installation at the opening ceremony of the games. Submissions can take any form — calligraphy, painting, digital design, paper-cutting, sculpture, or other creative forms — as long as the character is recognizable.
Participants will be entered into a prize draw, with rewards including tickets to the opening ceremony of the games, passes to local attractions, vouchers for dining, shopping, and accommodation in the historic city, as well as event souvenirs and other surprises.
