Film professionals from China and Africa gathered in Ningbo from Oct 17 to 20 to explore opportunities for co-productions, talent development, and wider distribution of films across both markets.

The event was part of the 2026 Yangtze River Delta International Youth Film Festival and coincided with the 70th anniversary of diplomatic relations between China and African countries.

On Oct 18, participants visited Xiangshan Film and Television City, where they explored a science fiction production facility and learned about the technology behind China's film industry. Later, at Ningbo University, discussions focused on co-productions, film distribution in Africa, and opportunities for young filmmakers.

Xu Yang of the China Film Administration said the event provided an opportunity for filmmakers from both sides to learn from each other and build a foundation for practical cooperation.

Martin Mhando, former president of the Zanzibar International Film Festival, recalled that Chinese films had been screened widely in Africa since the construction of the Tanzania-Zambia Railway. He noted that film had helped people from China and Africa better understand one another and build mutual trust.

Another initiative announced during the event was the development of a database documenting African visual and performing arts, including film, theater, music, painting, and photography. A team from Zhejiang University has already conducted oral history interviews in Rwanda and Botswana, with further research planned in other African countries.

The initiative will help document African artistic heritage while creating more opportunities for cultural exchange and collaboration between China and Africa.
