Hangzhou cafe offers work and training for young people with disabilities
Xiaoman Tongxue, an employment project for young people with intellectual or developmental disabilities, opened its first permanent shop on Hangzhou's Macheng Road on Oct 13, bringing vocational training into daily business.
The project grew out of an initiative that used food carts to support inclusive employment. It was jointly launched by the Zhejiang Provincial Disabled Persons' Federation, the Alibaba Foundation, and a local nonprofit organization.
Inside a provincial center for people with disabilities, the shop covers more than 100 square meters, with separate preparation and dining areas. Its five employees include three experienced workers without disabilities and two young people with disabilities. They prepare coffee, other drinks, and light meals, and make cultural and creative products.
Tasks are matched to individual abilities. Some participants make simple drinks, others package products or learn to serve customers, and those needing more time can begin with supporting duties, according to the shop manager.
A federation official said preparing a meal, arranging a shelf, packing an order, and welcoming a customer each contribute to developing job skills. The shop is intended to connect training, work, and social interaction while helping the public better understand people with disabilities.
Zhejiang plans to open more stores and refine its training, workplace practice, and employment support through daily operations. The aim is to give more people with disabilities opportunities to work, demonstrate their abilities, and continue developing their skills.
