Date of establishment of sister city relations with Jinhua: January 1994

Tochigi city, with a population of 161,000 and an area of 3,331 square kilometers, is located in the south of Tochigi Prefecture in the central area of Honshu Island, in Japan. The city has relatively developed agriculture and is rich in tourism resources.

Tochigi was the first international sister city of Jinhua – located in East China's Zhejiang province – and official exchanges between the two metropolises started in 1989. They subsequently signed the agreement on the establishment of sister city relations in January 1994.

Since then, the two have conducted frequent exchanges and cooperation in their economies, culture, education and in other fields.

In April 2020, Jinhua donated 10,000 masks to Tochigi to help fight the COVID-19 pandemic.

In March 2021, Jinhua organized a photo exhibition on the theme of Tochigi. The five-day exhibition attracted tens of thousands of visitors.
