The competition was designed to test the full range of a chef's skills. Each contestant was required to make three hot dishes on the spot – with specified special ingredients – and the face-off lasted 60 minutes.

It was stipulated that the featured raw material was Jinhua ham. Each contestant received a piece weighing 300-500 grams and made a ham dish with chicken or fish.

Five professional judges gave scores based on six factors – taste, texture, color, shape, nutrition and hygiene, and time control.

Ten participants were named "golden chefs". They were Fang Weibing, Huang Liangtao, Zeng Rongkang, Xu Jianhui, Tang Yingzhi, Chen Jian, Zheng Wenrong, Ke Jian, Fang Yonghe and Xu Wangtao.
