They were spotted by Jiang Xiaolong, a bird watcher who happened to be photographing birds in Changmantang village. It was his first time to see a group of Eurasian spoonbills (platalea leucorodia). He said that previously he had only seen one or two Eurasian spoonbills at a time.

Eurasian spoonbills are classified as national second-class protected animals in China. They are wading birds, which are unable to swim and like to stay in the shallow water. They typically eat fish, shrimp, and shellfish.

The most prominent part of the Eurasian spoonbill is its mouth, which resembles the musical instrument pipa. It is also known as a "bird beauty" because of its attractive appearance and elegant posture.

If these Eurasian spoonbills remain in Lanxi for a long time, there is a high probability that they will stay for the winter.
