Jinhua, a renowned historic and cultural city in Zhejiang province, is poised to become the cultural hub of central and western Zhejiang. Committee members shared strategies to achieve this goal during the fifth session of the eighth Jinhua Municipal Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC).
A focal point was the preservation of Shangshan culture, a Neolithic culture dating back 11,000 to 8,500 years in the Jinqu Basin in central and western Zhejiang. Widely recognized as an origin of rice agriculture, the culture has left numerous related relics at its archaeological sites.
CPPCC Member Zheng Danfeng proposed leveraging the "Chinese Archaeology" project to deepen understanding of Shangshan culture and its early rice-growing societies. He also called for including Shangshan culture in the 15th Five-Year Plan (2026-30) for UNESCO World Heritage applications.
In traditional arts, the development of Wuju Opera was emphasized. CPPCC Member Cui Shouchen proposed a comprehensive strategy to revitalize this art form, focusing on all-domain collaboration, cross-sector integration, policy enhancement, talent cultivation, and public education.
These measures aim to strengthen the innovation and sustainability capacity of Wuju Opera, breathing new life into this traditional cultural heritage.
The Hengdian film industry, another cultural asset, is also facing upgrade challenges. CPPCC Member Xu Qiaoying recommended integrating the Hengdian Film and Television Cultural Industry Cluster into the optimization plans for the Jinyi Sector of the Zhejiang Pilot Free Trade Zone to enhance both sides' development.
In terms of cultural exports, CPPCC Member Wang Xinran proposed including relevant initiatives in the 15th Five-Year Plan, leveraging Yiwu's trade strengths to explore a model that blends cultural icons, products, and trade, and embeds cultural elements into the global commerce of small commodities.
