The Zhejiang Wuju Opera Research Institute (Zhejiang Wuju Opera Troupe) from Jinhua, Zhejiang province, launched its "Wuju Opera in Lion City" series at the Theatre at Mediacorp in Singapore on Aug 5. The premiere, Three Battles with the White-boned Demon, was met with enthusiastic applause.

Starting at 7:30 pm, the theater was filled to capacity. The classic tale, lively Wuju opera rhythms, and the performers' outstanding singing, acting, and martial arts captivated the audience. Applause and cheers resonated throughout the performance.

Former Singapore Deputy Prime Minister Heng Swee Keat attended the event and commended the performance. He noted that the production combines traditional culture and modern technology, conveying Chinese values such as discerning good from evil and taking responsibility.

Dong Xuyang, who played Zhu Bajie, said that Journey to the West is globally recognized. The performances rely on physical expression, which transcends language barriers, and with bilingual subtitles, international audiences can effortlessly follow the story.

The "Wuju Opera in Lion City" series runs from Aug 5 to 8, featuring The Legend of the White Snake, Mu Guiying, and a special showcase of selected opera scenes. It aims to bring authentic Wuju Opera to Singapore and foster cultural exchange between the two countries.
