Wencheng got its name from the posthumous title of Liu Ji, also known as Liu Bowen, one of the founders of the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644). In recent years, Wencheng has focused on building a regional cultural brand – which is led by Liu Bowen culture and which integrates She ethnic culture, overseas Chinese culture, red culture and filial piety culture.

Wencheng is home to two national intangible cultural heritage items, three provincial ICH items, 67 municipal ICH items, and 152 county-level ICH items. With its rich tourism resources, it has a national 5A-level scenic spot, three national 4A-level scenic spots and nine 3A-level scenic spots.
