Statistics from the Wenzhou municipal commerce bureau show that the city's total foreign trade value has grown 10.1 percent year-on-year to 241.12 billion yuan ($38 billion) in 2021, ranking sixth in East China's Zhejiang province.

The import value was up 20.3 percent year-on-year to 37.54 billion yuan, while the export value was up 8.4 percent to 203.58 billion yuan, marking the first time the port city exceeded the 200-billion-yuan threshold.

Authorities said the results were due to Wenzhou's continued efforts to improve its business environment and open up.

Wenzhou has rolled out and implemented a series of policies to tackle the increasingly complex international trade environment caused by the resurgence of the COVID-19 pandemic.

The city has since reaped fruitful results, such as $4.33 billion worth of goods being exported from pilot market procurement trade projects, the regular operation of freight trains between Wenzhou and Europe in 2021, and the construction of an import platform which consists of a base and a center that realized import values of 8.13 billion yuan in the January-November period, a 68.4 percent year-on-year increase.
