Wenzhou in East China's Zhejiang province held the "New Year Run for Health" on Jan 1, a traditional way for local residents to celebrate the New Year, local media reported.

The 40th "New Year Run for Health" started at 8 am both online and onsite, with the in-person participants running from the city's Sanyang wetland park while online-participants chose any place at any time between 8 am and 10 pm to complete their runs.

Around 500 residents joined in the 3.5-kilometer run and more than 3,000 people applied for their own runs online.

Yu Junchuan, a native of Southwest China's Sichuan province who has been working in Wenzhou for 18 years, loves running. He said that over the past three years, the pandemic has made it difficult for him to engage with his hobby.

Many runners particularly love the New Year run, he said, and he wants to have more opportunities to participate in the marathon and other running competitions in 2023.

"New Year Run for Health" is an annual tradition for Wenzhou residents looking to greet the New Year. It has been held 40 times.
