Wenzhou people have a custom of flying kites in the second month of the lunar calendar, leading over the years to the formation of their own kite culture.

Liu Lijian is the chairman of the Wenzhou Kite Association. Inspired by his family, he became the fourth-generation inheritor of Liu's kite-making techniques and is well-versed in the making of traditional Wenzhou kites.

Over the years, Liu has preserved tradition and brought forth new ideas through innovation, winning many awards in kite competitions across the country.

In this video, foreign anchor Anna and her son Jerry visit the Wenzhou Kite Culture Museum on Xinhe Street in Lucheng district. The walls and ceiling are covered with traditional Wenzhou kites, including dragon kites, swallow kites and theatrical mask kites, which are quite unique and come in a variety of shapes and sizes.

Anna and Jerry learned about the four basic steps of kite-making – tying, gluing, painting and flying – and also tried their hands at making a fish-shaped kite.
