Wenzhou, one of the co-host cities of the 19th Asian Games, recently issued a plan on transforming public signs into multilingual ones in preparation for the Games scheduled between Sept 23 and Oct 8.

The plan specifies standards for the city's multilingual logo system, which covers urban roads, transportation hubs, scenic spots, recreational and sports facilities, and major urban living communities.

According to the plan, the transformation process includes four phases and will be completed by the end of 2024. It will start from the competition area of the Asian Games and then gradually expand throughout the whole city.

The city initiated the transformation at the beginning of this year and has upgraded more than 700 signboards in parks and squares and on main roads.

Experts spoke highly of the city's work and offered advice.

Liu Xiaofang, a professor from Wenzhou Polytechnic, suggested that the transformation should also go online, especially foreign-language websites and media platforms. Liu said that all new landmarks of urban culture, commerce, trade, leisure and entertainment should be equipped with multilingual logos.

Wang Chiyu, senior engineer at the Wenzhou Design Assembly, also suggested that the transformation should be carried out in an orderly manner and the logo's design should reflect the local character.
