Wenzhou's inaugural general airport, the Taishun General Airport, broke ground on Dec 24, bridging a major transportation gap in the city's western mountainous regions.

The project, with an estimated investment of approximately 650 million yuan ($91.08 million), aims to propel Taishun into Zhejiang province's one-hour air traffic circle.

Taishun is a mountainous county under the administration of Wenzhou, bordering Fujian province in the south and adjacent to Jiangxi province. The general airport, located in Pengjia Mountain, Luoyang town, covers 41 hectares, or 615 mu, and is classified as a type A1 airport with a 2B airfield area, according to the Chinese standard.

That means upon completion, the airport will facilitate short-distance air transport, cargo logistics, flight training, and various other functions crucial for regional development.

The airport is part of Zhejiang's broader initiative to construct over 20 public general airports by 2025, fostering a comprehensive general aviation system.

The county also plans to leverage the airport project as a catalyst for opportunities in the broader economic sector, simultaneously advancing the construction of a general aviation industrial park.

Wenzhou, driven by the overarching goal of becoming a national transportation hub, continues its momentum in major transportation initiatives this year, with a new railway station and transportation hub under construction or planning, the Taishun General Airport serving as another pivotal milestone in the city's outreach network.
