A traditional dragon boat racing performance took place at Wenzhou Garden Expo Park in Zhejiang province on June 13. Nearly 50 teams and around 2,000 paddlers gathered to celebrate a vibrant aquatic festival on ancient waterways.
The location of Wenzhou Garden Expo Park is a core origin of Wenzhou's dragon boat culture. The Xianmen River, historically known as Qianhu, has recorded dragon boat races since the Song Dynasty (960-1279). At its peak, over 140 boats competed here, creating a spectacular scene.
The festivities began with the traditional ceremony of drawing the dragons' eyes on the boat, and a parade followed, with boats navigating the water one after another. The air filled with thunderous drums and paddles, while spectators lined the banks, cheering enthusiastically.
Resident Zhang Bo, who arrived early for a spot, expressed his excitement: "I grew up watching dragon boats by the river, but today feels different. This river's history and the park's beauty make me proud."
Wenzhou women's dragon boat team, which has scored impressive results in many competitions, added some extra elegance with a Thousand-Hand Bodhisattva performance, captivating the audience.
The Wenzhou event is part of the 2026 National Dragon Boat Festival event guided by the China Dragon Boat Association. As a city famous for its dragon boat culture in China, Wenzhou is enhancing its reputation in the world, integrating sports with cultural tourism.
