Twelve athletes from Wenzhou, Zhejiang province, have been selected to represent China at the 20th Asian Games, competing in swimming, athletics, sailing, soccer, karate, judo, and rhythmic gymnastics.
The Wenzhou team blends experience and fresh talent: seven seasoned athletes, including five defending champions, and five newcomers.
Swimming leads with four athletes, underscoring Wenzhou's status as a national swimming hub. Olympic champions Pan Zhanle and Xu Jiayu, along with Olympic bronze medalist Liu Yaxin, are set to compete, while 2011-born Fan Yaqi will debut.
The sailing team consists of three from Cangnan county, with Xiao Hailun debuting. Dai Qianqian from Yongjia county, also debuting, recently won the national javelin championship.
Liu Miaoting, 21, from Lucheng district, became Wenzhou's first rhythmic gymnastics world champion in 2025, winning gold in the group five-ribbon event.
At the previous Asian Games, Wenzhou athletes achieved their best results, winning 18 golds, five silvers, and two bronzes, breaking five Asian and two Games records.
The 20th Asian Games will take place from Sept 19 to Oct 4 in Japan. The Chinese delegation comprises 1,274 members, with 815 athletes competing in 38 sports and 369 events.
