Ninghai county in Ningbo has become a powerhouse in the global ski pole industry, producing equipment used by skiers across Europe, North America, and South America.

At Ninghai Better Outdoor Products Co, rows of poles fill the company showroom, from ultralight aluminum models to telescopic designs. One practice pole, aimed at beginner alpine skiers, has already emerged as a favorite among foreign buyers.

"It weighs less than 200 grams and features an ergonomic handle with an anti-slip texture, so skiers can hold it securely even with gloves on," said Guo Jinlong, the company's foreign trade manager. Adjustments to the handle size and telescopic mechanisms have been made specifically for European and American users. In the 2025 ski season, the company shipped over 400,000 pairs abroad, up 30 percent from the previous year.

In the factory, aluminum tubes are cut, polished, painted, and assembled into finished poles.

"We started with trekking poles, but the Beijing Winter Olympics gave us the push to focus on ski poles," said General Manager Zhu Xuefeng. The county's complete supply chain — from tubing and handles to assembly — allows prototypes in just seven days and mass production in a month.

Local firms also benefit from streamlined export procedures. Ninghai Customs has established fast-track clearance channels, pre-declared classification, and guidance on international trade compliance.

"These measures shorten delivery times and reduce costs, helping companies seize global winter sports orders more efficiently," said Tian Mingchao, head of the county's comprehensive customs division.

Ninghai now accounts for 60 percent of the world's ski pole production, combining flexible manufacturing, competitive pricing, and growing brand influence to secure a dominant position in the global market.
