A rare national treasure from Ningbo is set to make its mark in Hong Kong, showcasing ancient maritime culture and the city's enduring spirit of ambition.

From March 20 to Sept 20, the Hong Kong Heritage Discovery Center will host an exhibition featuring precious artifacts from across China. Representing Ningbo is the Brass "Yue" (battle-axe) with Rowing Men of Feather Headdress, a nationally protected first-class relic and the city's sole exhibit.

Dating back over 2,000 years, the brass battle-axe is intricately decorated. Its front depicts two dragons facing each other above a narrow boat carrying four figures in feathered headdresses, vigorously rowing — a striking snapshot of how ancient people lived and moved along the waterways. The carvings also reflect symbolic beliefs, including dragon totems, bird worship, and water-based competitions.

The artifact provides rare evidence that Ningbo's ancestors were skilled in rowing and competitive boat racing centuries ago. Beyond its historical importance, it has become a cultural emblem of the city, previously cited in Beijing's successful 2008 Olympic bid and in Ningbo's application for the Maritime Silk Road World Heritage initiative.

To be displayed in Hong Kong, it will connect audiences with Ningbo's history, showcasing the city's legacy of creativity, determination, and cultural exchange.
