An 82-year-old man's steadfast devotion to his critically ill wife over 105 days has captured hearts across Ningbo and Zhoushan, illustrating love in its purest form.
Chen Azhong traveled daily from Jintang Island in Zhoushan to the ICU of Ningbo Medical Center Lihuili Hospital, braving early mornings, long bus rides, and harsh weather to visit his wife, Xue, who had been hospitalized with severe complications following a stroke and pneumonia. Each visit, often lasting just 30 minutes, became a lifeline of comfort. On March 13, staff allowed him to stay an hour and a half, just three days before she passed away at 76.
Chen repeatedly described Xue as "the best woman in the world," recalling decades of shared care: she ran the household while he worked in the fields, saved him the best parts of fish, and even cared for his sick father. In December, he sang her a birthday song at her hospital bedside, creating a rare, tender moment amid the ICU's sterile walls.
The family faced enormous financial pressure, with daily ICU costs of nearly 4,000 yuan ($580) and savings exhausted. Chen refused most outside help, saying he would endure hardship himself rather than accept charity. Yet the local community quietly stepped in: bus fees were waived, seats reserved, and neighbors contributed funds and medicine to ease Xue's care.
Chen's steadfast devotion, coupled with the compassion of those around him, left a profound impression, showing that love and kindness can transcend distance, hardship, and even death.
