Zhoushan targets full-chain growth of large yellow croaker industry
Zhoushan in East China's Zhejiang province is accelerating efforts to upgrade the large yellow croaker industry following new provincial policies aimed at building a full industrial chain, with targets set for 24 billion yuan ($35 billion) in output and 80,000 metric tons of production by 2030.
As a key origin of the Daiqu large yellow croaker, Zhoushan is focusing on seed breeding, ecological farming, and industrial integration to drive growth. The species, once depleted due to overfishing, has recovered through aquaculture and now forms a major part of Zhejiang's marine economy.
Authorities are prioritizing the development of the seed industry, including germplasm protection, selective breeding, and standardized hatchery systems. Research institutions have developed improved strains, while stricter identification and regulation aim to address quality inconsistencies in the seed market.
On the farming side, Zhoushan is promoting ecological models such as deep-sea cages and land-sea relay systems, allowing fish to grow in natural waters before wintering in controlled environments. Digital management and marine ranching are also being expanded to improve efficiency and sustainability.
Efforts are also underway to extend the value chain through processing, branding, and logistics. Local producers are developing prepared food products and high-value derivatives, while building regional brands to enhance market recognition. New delivery methods, including drone transport, are being tested to improve distribution across island areas.
The strategy aims to shift the industry from volume growth to higher value-added development, positioning the large yellow croaker as a key driver of marine economic growth and rural income.
